Loud bang noise when heating/cooling Boxer 24

I have a BK Boxer 24 that I don’t burn continuously. We usually have a 4 or 5 hour fire in the evening before bed. It makes its fair share of pops, ticks, and pings as it heats up, but there’s almost always one (only one) loud bang as it heats and cools. Unfortunately the bang when it cools down is usually at 3AM. 😬

Stove is 9 months installed. I’ve probably burned one face cord in it. Is there anything I should check out or is that sound normal?

It is not normal - judging from what we see here.

It's likely some oil canning, which should not be happening. A plate cooling down and popping.

Can you record the sound so you can talk to your dealer? (You still have warranty.)

Fire it up during the day, when you are home and can sit with it. Load it the same as you would normally, in the evening. Record it as it heats up, and then record it as it cools back down.

Does the stove make the same noise the entire time or just when it heats up? To clarify, if you kept it burning for a greater period of time, say 12 hours, does the noise stop at some point?

No disrespect to others here, but there is some noise in every wood stove I have owned, yes both BK and others. Everyone is different about what level of noise is "normal" or acceptable. The loud pop heard in the video you referenced may not be oil canning, I've had a tube stove once that did the same thing. One end of the tube was held in place by a screw and once I removed the screw, the noise ended.

Please do see if you can record the sounds but keep in mind, some sound is normal.

I got a recording of the sound as it heats up. About 12 minutes into the burn. Top down burn with a few logs. Cat probe reads about 370 (I have a Condar). Otherwise just the normal ticks and pings of heating up.

Great recording (I was listening for it and still got a scare) and something very different from the dings and tings I normally hear indeed.

I poked around in the stove today looking for something obvious, but didn’t find anything. I did notice that the bypass shield looks like it wasn’t drilled right on one side so the hole is extra wide. Maybe by design? I was thinking it might have some extra play and as it heats up eventually expands enough to slide abruptly under the mounting nut or something.

That's normal but you can loosen the bolt as a test....
