I have a Lopi Cape Cod model wood burning stove. I cannot close my damper all the way because smoke starts to leak out the hole around the damper. How can I fix this?

This could be negative pressure. On what floor of the house is this stove located? What is the outdoor temperature?
Something is clogged up. Start with the chimney cap, and/or any horizontal parts of the stove pipe. Make sure the cat is not clogged with ash or degraded beyond use. It sounds like the cat is likely clogged. It came with a brush to clean the face of the cat, when’s the last time it was cleaned?
