Load of Oak Slabwood

I was getting low on wood so I bit the bullet and bought a bundle of Oak slabwood. I found it from a guy that was about 25 minutes away. It was $50 for the bundle and has been seasoned for a year. After knocking most of the snow off, it does burn nicely. Took me a few hours to cut, split and stack it all.

It doesn't really look like it from the pictures but the truck was really squatting in the back. It's a 3/4 ton truck with a 6.5 ft bed. I got a kick out of the mercedes that was tailgating me on my way home as I was going up a steep hill.

Ha! That's quite a load on your pickup. With my luck it would have slid off and been sticking in the grill of the Mercedes!

You can sure load a pick-up full!
That's a full load of slabs.
Glad you didn't have to hit the brakes hard. A piece of plywood between your rear window & wood & a strap on the front end of the load,
maybe next time just in case. (make me feel safer)

My brother-in-law in PA get 2 - 3 loads of slabs every year.
Truck loaded just like yours.
He cuts his with an old radial-arm saw.
All perfect length.
How did you cut yours? (heavy)
Sure looks good all stacked up & dry

That's a full load of slabs.

I like the plywood idea. I have a back rack on the truck so the window did have a little protection. A piece could have made it through the rack though. There is metal banding around the middle of the bundle so that made me feel a little bit better.

The guy that loaded it for me said the other day someone showed up with a Ford Ranger to get a bundle the same size as the one that's in my truck. He said he just laughed at him.

I set up a saw horse behind the truck and just pulled each slab out and whacked it with a chainsaw. Pull cut, pull cut...repeat until your wrists and fingers won't move anymore.

Oh, and I couldn't figure out what to do with all the sawdust/snow mixture on the driveway (there was about a 4'x8' section where sawdust was about 6 inches deep)- so i just shoveled it all into the bed of the truck. Figure that most of it will blow out when I'm driving down the road and what doesn't, i'll just pull over somewhere and shovel it out.

I get it delivered for $100 ($50 for pine)- my bundles end up about a cord or a bit more each. Those look 8' long, and a little under 4' across, so I guess that truck should be complaining!

Yeah - all cut and split, mine came out to be just over a cord. I split all of the slabs after I cut them into 2-3 pieces. The slabs were actually 10 feet long!
