So Thursday, Friday, and Saturday I was able to find some free wood in the form of dropped unwanted trees. Thursday's find was just under a cord of rounds of dead but standing poplar brought home in 1 and a half trailer loads, about 20 minutes from home. Friday and Saturday were a load each day of freshly dropped Chinese elm, our hardest naturally occurring tree in the region, from about 45 minutes away. Second load was topped with a bunch of pieces of some form of unwanted poplar from the same home. Ended up being a cord of elm and a few pieces of the other poplar. Also on a Home Depot run on Friday afternoon I found about 8 rounds of willow at 22" lengths at a house where a guy just dropped a HUGE willow. My stove only handles 20" lengths so I had to chop them in half and end up with 10-11" lengths.

A very productive weekend. I think it's the old saying demonstrating itself, "what goes around, comes around." The previous weekend I had towed my splitter up to divorced lady friend of the family and and spent half a Saturday helping her cut down some longer wood and split around a half a cord of rounds she hadn't had split yet. I had been waiting for some free elm to pop up for a long time. All of this coincidence, maybe, but I don't think so. Enjoy the pics...

Nice start elijah.

The curse of all wood burners is how many times we handle it before we thrown it in the fire. With that in mind I'd suggest you split what has to be split before you stack it. If you leave it in a ugly pile you'll be more motivated to split it.

On the other hand, once those big rounds are out of the way and neatly stacked procrastination takes over...

Excellent elijah. Now as savageactor stated, you need to get that wood split as soon as possible. What goes around did come back around in this case.

Looks great.....sort of off topic , we are putting up a privacy fence in the spring. I love the look of yours. Did you buy the sections prebuilt or did you manually build it?

Thanks,

Mike

Great job, I've never bought wood so I know the feeling well of riding home with free wood in the back.

Actually this wood will be winter 2012. I have 2010 split and stacked and almost done with the end of 2011.

Totally impressed with the weight you've got on that single axle trailer too! Nice loads!

Yeah, that was a huge concern for me when I pulled off with the wet elm. Actually the tires are what concerned me, I had a full 55 psi in them and they were still squished pretty good. I touched them when I got home and they weren't hot, so it looks like I'll have more trust next time. I was pretty worried. It's a 3500 lb axle but the tires are C rated. I keep fresh Mobil 1 grease in the bearings and they barely warm when I finally got home. I'd like to find some D rated but I'd probably have to switch to a 15" truck wheel which means I'd probably need to lift it a little more, etc.
