I am putting in a Jotul Number 1 stove in front of an existing wood burning fireplace. I want to put down a piece of soapstone for the hearth. The existing flooring is 3/4” oak over plywood subfloor.
Since this stove is the non UL version that doesn’t have an insulated floor in the stove, I am worried about the soapstone (which is 1 1/4” thick) being enough on top of the oak flooring. I planned to just put a layer of underlayment under the soapstone which is 1/16” recycled rubber material.
Should I add more under the soapstone? Or could I install an insulated floor in the stove?
Thanks.
