That’s IT ! … I put my foot down and the cabin is getting a New Jotul F445 holiday. I’ve been waiting 2 years for this stove. Up here at the Summit we have had years of storms and gone without power for days. Snow storms gifted us nearly 4 cords of wood, cut , stacked and now seasoned. The F445 is ordered. Of course I went down the rabbit hole to make a decision. Oh the agony of spec analysis! I’ve been night browsing all the information this site has provided.
Thank you very much. Here’s the site of our current GF that’s going away .. not soon enough! .. once we decide on some stone veneer enhancements. I will post the after project pics.. with the lessons learned.. it’s a DIY project.. the cardboard box is the height of the new hearth .. for when we are 60 something.. thinking forward. Hopefully by Xmas 2024 .. So excited for this transfer BACK to the real world of burning 🔥 wood .

Check the alcove clearance requirements for the F445. They are very different. Stone veneer will not reduce this unless the veneer is the surface finish of a ventilated, NFPA wall shield system . It can be done, but needs an approved wall shield. Here are the requirements.

Yes, you are correct about the alcove requirements, We will be in compliance with the rear and bottom heat shields. The alcove is 10 inches shallow and will be gutted and refit with PERMAbase all 4 sides. With a 1 inch air gap between. The stove will set forward with only the sides in veneer rock. I’m definitely adding another inch to the 3 sides setup for good measure and inspection.

The floor level will have 18x18 ceramic set in flush. The hearth will be 54”wide and 9.5” to 9.3/4 tall 24” deep. I measured 3 times to get it perfectly arranged plus 1 inch as this will become the focal point of the cabin. In 2006 we built an 18x10 kitchen with beautiful knotty alder cabinet's. ..I was able to perfect measuring skills for all the new appliances and the sink 4 windows 3 French doors and a transom window. The coffee/whiskey station will follow the wood stove project. California has a nightmare of insurance coverage problems now. Our entire mountain community of builders are experiencing a “ wood-stove revival” 2 of my neighbors have new Jøtul’s.. Oh my ! …I'm geeking out here today….. I’ve told all my neighbors about this forum.. I love seeing people who also love wood stove new builds and tinkering. ;-) begreen, thank you .. btw my husband made all these crazy round wood piles like they do in Scotland.. yes we are wood geeks.

The shields not only need the 1" gap behind them, but they also need at least a 1" gap at the bottom and top so that air can freely convect behind the shields. Note that the clearance measurement with the shield, is to the nearest combustible, which is the wall studs behind the shield.
