After a few weeks researching and stopping in my local shop I have decided on the Jotul 550 for a new install.

Here is a picture of its new home prior to the install. I will add pictures once complete.

Still have to get approval from the installer to make sure everything will fit.

35" Wide x 28" High x 24" deep

Thanks for all the useful information I have found on this site!

These weeks between order and install are making me very anxious. Cold weather is setting in, the 28th can't come fast enough.
 
Start/keep working on your wood, that will keep you warm. ;lol

They don't install block off plates but I had them stuff the damper with the left over liner insulation. I hope this helps with heat lose.

Looks great but that thermometer isn't going to read much anything meaningful there. You can stick it in the blower slot next to the center but it will be hard to read, or get an IR gun. The cast trim piece on the front is a second layer with a bit of an air gap in between, it will read way low. Good luck with it!

Ugh, I hate to see an install like this on an exterior chimney, you are loosing so much heat out the back, don't believe me, get an ir gun and read the temps of the bricks on the outside backside of that fireplace, you will see at least a 5 degree jump if not more with that insert cruising along. Your loosing heat up the chimney with no good block off plate and out the back with no insulated fireplace.

Run it for this year but I would read up on pulling it this summer and doing some changes for next year.

Install looks good btw, don't be scared to use it, just read up to make it better for next year. Most of these guys want to install and run.
 
Man, that is one pretty insert. Those Jotules sure are lookers. Hope you enjoy it.

Beautiful!! Can't go wrong with a Jotul.

If they made toilet bowls, I'd buy one.
 
Thanks for the complements guys! Love the looks of this stove. I'll take the advise on blocking up the damper possibly over the summer. This winter will be getting used to and learning this new process. I have much to learn being that I've always burned in brick fireplaces with no insert in the past.

Two break in fires today, 2 larger ones tomorrow and then we'll see what she's made of.

Great looking stove and hearth. The 550 looks exactly like the 350 in a picture.
 
Looks good. Did you move your thermometer into the slot where the blower air comes out? I put mine in the slot just left of center. I have it turned 180 degrees so when I look into the slot I see what would be the 12 o'clock on the thermometer which is about 500 degrees. I also have an IR thermometer which I can shoot in there.

Basically, don't use any of the cast iron in front for a temp reading cause it won't be accurate.
 
Burning at about 540 degrees, air shut completly down, blower on low. Holding the first floor @ 72 degrees.

Called the dealer today 12/9 they will be out on 12/11 to look at the fan. I'm sure its something I can look at myself but after paying what i just paid why not have the pros do it.
