I've been using a QuadraFire (Aladdin) Isle Royale for about 23 years and am happy with it. Curiously, I don't know where the secondary air inlet is? That is- on which part of the stove does the secondary air supply come from?

The secondary air is fed into the tubes at the baffle, so the air enters from somewhere on the outside of the stove.

Thank you,

Peter

Not sure, but isn't there a primary air plenum fed by the outside air port? Maybe it takes off there. @Jags any thoughts?

There primary air comes in from the lower front through "the dog house" (the part to which the door latch locks on to).

(Jotul 602- great stove...still have it but it's not in use...had a 118 too).

I have never looked at the parts breakdown, but I believe the secondary air comes from back body of the stove and is fed through the pivot point of the secondaries to the tubes. But honestly that's just a swag.

Years ago you could call Aladdin/Quadrafire and ask questions. Now...I can't even find the manufacturers web site. I did find something but it only had a "submit a question". I've found those sort of things typically get the reply of "contact a factory authorized service man".

Buy way of background, I rebuilt the baffle area, installed new rivet nuts and button head bolts. Pretty easy...if you know what you're doing...and you don't need to purchase a rivet nut tool- you can make one easy (youtube).

The secondary air is admitted only when the primary is closed....that's my guess. Otherwise, I'd expect to see flames at the tubes. I was looking for an accumulation of dust at any admittance area but found no great amount.

I'm trying to make sure I didn't seal/caulk the secondary air admittance areas on the external upper and lower joints of the left and right side of the stove.

Probably easier....use compressed air at the tubes and see where it comes out.

Alladin was consumed by Quadrafire years ago. Now, Quad is part of the Hearth & Home family and the beautiful Dovre stoves are history.

I think that secondary air is always open. It is pulled through the secondary tubes once the vacuum of draft, created by the hotter flue, draws the air through the tubes. As one closes down the primary air, the suction on the secondaries increases.

That makes sense. I wont know for several days- it's warm weather.

I'm still guessing that the rear, outside-air intake feeds into a plenum from which the startup, primary (and air wash), and secondary air are distributed via internal channels.

Yes, I have the manual. The parts illustration doesn't show the casting channels that route the air.

This rebuild thread shows them a bit better. Note the 2 openings at the rear of the base. I think they are for the secondary supply.

I love that these Isle Royales keep going and going. It was #1 on my list but the clearance requirements didn't work out for our corner install.

You might be correct. I'll check it with something smokey and see what happens.

It's pretty good. We used to have a Jotul 118 until 2000. 'Got it during the Oil Embargo. It was glorious. Always wanted a Jotul Cook stove but never found one. I used to collect wood stoves- a real heavy hobby. My favorite was a Jotul Combi fire.

Never like Vermont Castings. Just something about 'em bothered me. Had a Defiant.

Very much enjoyed the 1970's era wood stoves before the EPA got involved. It's enjoyable to run a wood stove without having to baby the thing, or worry about the catalyst failing because, God forbid, you burned pine!
