I am installing an obsolete Majestic fireplace. In the upper area of the burn chamber, there are a series of holes along the outside edge, on both sides, just inside the upper louvers. They are covered with a pivoting plate that has insulation between it and the holes. This is a direct vent fireplace and I cannot figure out what the holes are for. This is a 360DVS3 fireplace.

They are blow off ports. If the gas builds up before ignition, when it DOES ignite, an explosion can occur. Those ports will act as a pressure relief, so the glass won’t blow out of the unit & into your living room.
Thank you! That makes sense. I had a fireplace that did that but the glass held.....I don't remember blowoff relief in that one, a Regency I think....Its still working for my son and it blew up on him actually. Sent me video's. The gas holes in the burner were plugged closest to the pilot and delayed the ignition.
