Hello,

We recently moved into a home that has one of those pre fab metal fireplaces. I wanted to install a wood burning insert but have been told that you can not install an insert into such a fireplace. Is this correct? Are there inserts that can be installed? Any info will be greatly appreciated.

There are many inserts that are approved for installing into a ZC prefab firebox, here is an example of one.

I was in the same delimma. Decided to completely rip out the chimney and fireplace and redo the entire thing, yes it was costly, but I strongly believe in doing it right the first time.

Thank you all for all of the info, I appreciate it. We currently have the Marco Classic 36" Fireplace. I'll take all of the info on the fireplace and measurements to a dealer.

I was recently in your situation as well and ended up with the (broken link removed to http://www.lopistoves.com/product_guide/detail.aspx?id=210). Specifically designed for a prefab ZC, low emissions with high BTU's. Not quite finished with the stonework (thinstone), but here's a (broken link removed to http://picasaweb.google.com/jeff.linke/Fireplace/photo#5127478722131250130).

I don't mine has as big a firebox, but I'm not sure.
I'd go for the biggest firebox possible, within other constraints, such as dealer location.

EDIT: I just looked up specs-both have 1.6 ft3 fireboxes, so they're comparable.
