I've got a 36" Dia. oak trunk about 10ft -12 ft long. It is twisted with knots and a double pith. So splitting 18" Rounds (by hand) is a nightmare. I end up noodling a good bit of it.

So i'm considering cutting 9"rounds that i can load N/S in my jotul f400.

The problem of course is stacking these shorties.

I don't really want to go the totes route. Does anyone have any decent ideas on how to stack these?

Nope. At 9" a stack of more than 2 ft will convert in a pile soon...

I would wrap a section of 3 or 4' high weld wire fence around a pallet and toss them in. Use galvanized pipe hanging straps to screw the base of the fence to the pallet. On a typical 40-42" x 48" pallet it would hold a quarter to a third of a full cord. That is how I have handled my uglies/shorties. In your case you would probably need to build 2 or 3, depending on how orderly you packed them in the bin and what height of fencing you used.

Another option if you wanted to try standard stacking in a row would be use two adjacent rows in parallel with an air gap between and use frequent longer tie pieces that bridge between the two stacks. For example, if you had two rows of 9" pieces in parallel with a 6" air gap between, you could place 24" sticks every couple feet of run and couple feet of height that are part of both rows to try to increase stability.

^^that (the wire fence and pallet) imo. Don't stack, but if you make them and have a few in a row, it looks as good as stacked wood. (And is cheaper than buying totes.)

If you have some non-shorties to go with the shorties, you can make holzhausen and throw all the shorties in the middle.

Thanks for the ideas. Will see how many shorties i end up with.

So i got a bit lucky and found further down the trunk the 18" rounds were splitting ok. So the shorties count is less that i thought and i'm stacking them about a foot high on the top of the stacks along with the uglies.

Will be interested how long they will take to season as they are in the prime drying spot for my set up here.

I used whatever pieces of fencing wire I had on hand, including chicken wire. Not impressive looking, but the stack dried out bit since the spring. Then there's the challenge again of stacking in the rack where the stove is. Sometimes I'll just keep them in containers and try to use them quickly.

I like that yours is narrow for better drying and has a smaller footprint than totes.
