WOW
Couldnt have happened to nicer folks. I feel very bad for them.
JAFFREY — Billows of smoke and a few flames were still rising from the charred ruins of the Heart Line Stove Shop at 261 North St. in Jaffrey this morning — two hours after firefighters reached the blaze.
The fire, reported at 4:50 a.m., destroyed the roughly 4,000-square-foot building.
A Peterborough firefighter suffered minor injuries when he slipped on some ice, but he refused medical treatment, according to Jaffrey Fire Chief David M. Chamberlain.
The shop, owned by Larry D. Miller, sells gas, coal, wood and wood pellet stoves, and has been in business for more than 15 years.
When firefighters arrived, flames were rising through the roof near the rear of the building, Chamberlain said. It took about 90 minutes to get the fire under control, he said.
About 50 to 60 firefighters from the Monadnock Region responded to the fire, he said.
Chamberlain said the cause of the fire is still undetermined, but so far it doesn’t seem suspicious.
He estimated the damage to be at least $300,000, but said that number is based on the value of the building, a former sawmill with sheet metal siding.
The Millers, who live across the street from the building, declined to comment this morning.
Firefighters from Rindge, Peterborough, Troy, Fitzwilliam, Dublin, Hancock, Harrisville, New Ipswich and Winchendon, Mass., responded to the fire.
Chamberlain said black ice on the roads early this morning delayed firefighters by a few minutes.
When they arrived, a priority was to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby warehouse where a truck and some equipment were located, he said.
