Hi all, my first post at this forum. I've had a Hearthstone Heritage stove for 25 years, in this location (first pic). Got a great deal on a Heartstone Phoenix last year and swapped out the old Heritage. Now suddenly, my homeowner ins. co. wants a certified installer to sign off with inspection of code compliance, never had them inquire about it, ever. Turns out, this stove has no rear heat shield like my Heritage did, and I need one to be compliant. Specifically p/n 96-58602 (pulled from Stoveworld website). With this heat shield, the local shop will sign off on it (with some other small fixes). Problem is, that p/n is obsolete, Hearthstone no longer offers it. I know I can make one, or the shop can make one, but is still not a manufacturer part, subject to liability in case of fire; I get it. I'm a small business owner, CYA!
That's my story. I'm asking if anyone knows of old stock on the shelf? A burned out Phoenix with a heat shield on it? Just putting it out there. My only option is change the stove, as there's no way to get to the rear clearance, without that part.
Lmk what you all think, look forward to hearing some great news! Somebody has one on the shelf somewhere! Or someone knows of an alternative way or part that would meet the standards? Know someone that works at Hearthstone, other than customer service? Like, the guy in the warehouse? I'm open to all or any ideas.
Just for good measure, my other Phoenix (2nd pics), up in the north woods. Ins. co. doesn't know about that one though!
Thanks all
Mark

Fabrication at this point may be the only option.

I could make that shield in 25 minutes, respectfully. Needs to be a factory piece to pass the bar. Maybe someone has one is all I'm hoping for here. Not looking forward to another stove swap episode.
Input appreciated Sir.

Code does not require it to be a factory piece.

Interesting. I very respectfully sent an email to the shop boss, inquiring what the actual code is, and why we can't fabricate one? His reply:
Our policy is that no accessories shall be installed on any hearth products unless it has been approved by the manufacturer.

If you can get a written statement from Hearthstone for an aftermarket heat shield to be accepted and present that to us then we would be able to move forward.

Now, I get it. That's about exactly what I expected him to say. Nobody wants liability for an accident, and that's exactly what he just said.
To anyone following this post, I ask, is this going to be the norm every shop I call? Do some shops honor their own fabricated tin work? I mean, certainly there has to be some custom work guys are doing, whether on the stove or flue to meet code. Wouldn't that be the same thing, and be subject to questioning if an accident occurred?
I'm a licensed electrician, I know exactly how code and liability works.
I'm just wondering, for those in the know, if this will be the answer for every shop I inquire upon. At this point, my option of keeping this stove is fading in the rear view.
Thanks for taking the time to read, looking forward to hearing your respected opinions.
Best,
Mark

Doesn't matter what the shop says, matters what the inspector and insurance companies say. As you said, making your own heat shield is not difficult and has been done by thousands of people.

The ins. co. requires the licensed shop to sign off, putting liability on them. The shop (this one anyway) says no go. I could make the shield, then get dropped my ins. I've already been dropped by 2 prior ins. co's. due to the wood stove. Illinois has their own standards I guess.
You could try these guys. I don’t see the rear shield listed but you never know.
Thanks Todd. I was in the middle of doing just that, per your recommendation, when something dawned on me. I went back and had a good look at the elusive heat shield I'm hoping to find (see pics), then went and looked at the rear of my stove. It appears this stove has no mounting tabs on the rear to screw a heat shield into. Which is leading me to believe, this particular model may not accept a heat shield.

Time to go right to Hearthstone tech with this and get a straight answer. For those interested, I'll post how this turns out.

The heat shield is mounted on the wall, not the stove.
This part is mounted on the stove. It's not the same as an NFPA 211 wall shield.

That makes sense to me as well, same effect. Not going to help me here though. I'm waiting on official response from the manufacturer.
Ask if they could provide a spec for the rear shield that meets their tested requirements. This would be the actual size, metal type, metal gauge, etc.

Well I got my reply from Heartstone, which is what I expected:

I forwarded your message to my guy at Hearthstone, and this is his response.

As you know, each stove is independently tested to establish the clearances to the combustibles. The Heritage and Phoenix would have some slightly different clearance requirements. If an aftermarket shield is used, we cannot say if the tested clearances would apply. The stove would have to be tested with the fabricated shield. It would make sense that some reduction is going to take place, but the exact clearance is unknown.

In the pictures you sent me the tag has the part number for the heatshield for the stove and it is discontinued. Part number 96-58602

I’m sorry that we are not able to help you with this more.

And that's the death nail for my Phoenix stove. If anything, maybe it helps someone out there in the same position. These internal insurance audits are here to stay, in Illinois anyway. I am by no means a man that follows the norm, or enjoys being in compliance. In this case, I have no choice. Comply or lose my homeowner insurance. My only solution here is to buy a stove, with approved heat shield. At least I have a solution, so it's not all bad.

Thanks for all your input fellas, I'm putting this one to bed.

Or find an insurance company that would be ok with it as long as you pass code. Then you could build your own heat shield. If you aren't interested in a new insurer than it seems you would need a new stove.

Yeah, well I've already told my last two ins. companies to KMA when it comes to having an indoor inspection. Expressly to inspect my stove. Im told by my agent that I'm on my last leg, in this capacity. Or deny and pay an absurd rate with a no name company.
The good news is, I own one of these things!
