I have the hearthstone heritage. Really like the stove a lot. Just wondering if anyone else has a really high draft situation. The control to shut it down doesn’t do a lot. It does some but not enough so that I ever have coals in the morning even if I pile it with hardwood. I have a straight double wall pipe that is about 25ft. I have tried a damper key on my last stove which didn’t do anything. I checked for air leakage. The only thing I found is that air sucks up the pipe at the base a bit. Seems to be attached well. I’ll send a pic. The people who installed it told me that it’s not air tight there. Anyway is there any way to slow the draft down. They suggested two damper keys but that seems crazy. I can live with it how it is. I have got used to it and shut it down quick but there must be something.

Thanks
Lauren

I have a Mansfield under a 20' straight stack and don't have that issue. 25' would be pulling hard once it's up to temp. The air intake by design doesn't close all the way so coupled with high draft from the stack I could see the stove being hard to calm down. If you where to check the draft with the stack running at temp I'm sure that where you would find the culprit.

I don't think a little seepage at that joint is doing it, it would less lessen the amount of air through the stove by pulling through the crack.

A damper is the way to go as a cheap start. I just paid 11 bucks for a universal damper I put into a 6" section of double wall stove pipe on mine. I don't have to use it normally but have had to calm the stove down after a hot load several times.

2 key dampers isn't excessive when you have a really strong draft, pulling air through the stove.

Also, check your door gaskets for leakage. When it's running, go around them with a punk or incense stick and see if it pulls the smoke in,

Or the dollar bill test (when the stove is cold).

I had a stove pipe damper on the last stove and it didn’t make any change at all. I could try it again with this new stove. This is a pic of the draft turned all the way down. It’s not like it’s out of control or anything but I never have coals in the morning and the wood burns fast even if it’s hardwood. I wish the control on the stove could be closed even more. I also found the first year I had the stove I was able to get it to burn slower. I vacuum out the cats when they look dirty and that seems to help. I find when they are dirty it gets insanely out of control.

Let us know how the pipe damper works out.
If you're installing one?

What was your last stove? Members have added material to the damper to block the open parts.

Pacific energy Neo 2.5. I bought it new and had to get rid of it it made such loud banging noises on heat up it was a disaster. I had posted a video before about it. It sounded like it was going to explode. Tried a damper key to slow the draft and it did nothing. Got the hearthstone heritage instead. Still have a high draft but not as bad. I wish the damper could be closed more. Last night I had it going good. After I had a good bed of coals added two pieces of dry oak. Some blue dancing flames at the top and a low burn. It wasn’t out of control or anything. Draft shut as low as it could go. Everything was good for over an hour. After an hour and a half I look at it’s a blazing inferno in there and my cat probe is almost in the red. I vacuum the cat once in a while but does anyone take them out to clean?
