Hello, I have a hearthstone heritage soap stone wood stove that the cast iron side door frame (where the door latches) is worn so badly, that the door will not stay shut.
I tried to repair it with a high temp putty by filling in the worn area - it worked for a little while, until the stove heated up to a temp and melted the putty.
I ended up ordering a new door frame from the company I purchased the stove from. They told me that it would be a simple replacement, but after removing the four screws in each corner & the two bolts (top and bottom) of the frame, it is just as solidly in place as it was before. It appears that I might have to remove the top of the stove first, but I'm not sure how to get the soap stone off which looks like it is cemented to the top of the stove. Has anyone one ever replaced the side door frame and could you walk me through how to do it?

Thanks,
Cullen

Cullen, welcome to the forum. I've not heard of someone dealing with this problem, but you could try doing a search of the site for more info. Also, traffic here is rather low right now, so keep checking back for answers if you don't hear from someone right away.

Sad to hear about your stove. How long have you had it?

Hi Matt - Thanks. I did search the site and found some info on the problem I am having: https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/45982/
After reading through the posts, I'm even more confused? It appears I will need to replace the side door as well as part of the repair? Is there a product (appoxy / glue) that anyone has found that could hold up to the heat so I could just "build up" the lip of the door frame where it is worn?
Oh yea, I bought the stove new in Sept. 2003 - it is a model #8021
Thanks,
Cullen

Maybe you should visit your dealer and ask for help. It would probably be worth the extra money to have them do it if your not comfortable. I wonder if a local metal fab could fix it?

If you want to email me at [email protected] I could email you some pdf instructions I just found in the dealer only section of Hearthstones website.

I just read thru some of it and it does say the top must come off:

BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Work on a cold stove. If the stove is installed, disconnect the
stovepipe. Place a bungee cord around the body of the stove. You will need to remove the top
casting in order to replace the side doorframe. Due to the weight of the top casting, we
recommend two people for this job.

This is my #1 complaint about the hearthstone Heritage. The chinsy latch system and especially what is involved to fix it.

How hard would it have been to install a steel insert of some sort at the latch point that would wear better and be easier to replace.
