Over the past 2 days I was able repair some firebrick that were dislodged during the demolition phase and finished tearing up the front of the hearth, and leveling the entire floor of the firebox and hearth. Being on a concrete slab, I was able to tile directly using porcelain tiles, a polymer based thin-set and sanded grout. This is my first time tiling, so excuse the roughness of the job. I still need to work on the grout lines a bit and seal.

I should have went with wood trim for tansition over metal casing. I guess I can still tackle that.

Looks really nice !!

Shawn

Gee Stax, if this is your first time I can only imagine how good the second time will be. Congratulations.

Porcelain tile is nice and hard. I did my first tile job a few years ago. The big mistake I made was not wiping small sections as I grouted. I grouted the whole floor and by the time I was half way done wiping it was setting up on the top of the tiles. Took many acid washes to clean that mess up.

Looks great Stax.

What is that vertical pipe inside the reconfigured fireplace? Support for the (formerly) cantilevered part of the brick structure? Rick

Guys, thanks for your comments. It has been a slow process as I'm learning to work with my hands. Rick, that vertical pipe was standard on all of Levitt and Sons fireplaces. If you scroll back up and look closer, you can see the full pole behind the black mesh screen in pic 1. Built in 53, changed owners several times. I'm the first to alter it.

Mike, I'm working with a grout brush tonite to better define my grout lines and remove any excess sitting atop the tiles. I think I'll remove the damper tomorrow. After that, I will purchase the liner kit.

I second, third and fourth that. I'm trying to imagine what it would be like if I tackled it...I shudder to visualize it. Really looks great.

I facing doing an extension to my hearth to hold a new replacement stove. I shall return here to look at these photos in the moments that I'm despairing of the
mess I've created.
