Has anyone painted a jotul Rangeley?

Being one of those annoying wives who care about beauty more than function...I wanted the oslo in ivory for aesthetic purposes, but wanted to cook on top too..and have read here that it ruins the finish. My husband wanted a stove that was a bit beefier and he likes to bbq... So we just bought a Rangeley, and I am thinking of painting it with Thurmalox in ivory (Stove Bright only carries Almond) along with the double wall pipe...anyone done this? I've seen people paint pipe in white here on Hearth, but not a whole stove. I don't know if I'm just going to ruin it and end up painting it black again. Thanks!

For best success stick with the brand paint that Jotul uses. Contact your dealer or Jotul support to find out what they use. Be careful with the pipe. Is it double-wall?

Your Rangeley is painted with flat black from Stove Bright. I have never used thermolux, so I can't say for sure how it holds over the stove bright. Since its flat black I would assume it would bound ok. I have re-painted several stoves with a new color. Remove the glass and mask off anything that shouldn't be painted and go for it! Here's one I did for my dad earlier this summer.

i'll tell you right right that no ivory paint will stay white when it's on a stove. The last set of pipes we painted with Thermolux ivory turned pink the closer to the stove you looked and only got worse the more the stove was used. We don't reccomend the lighter shades at all for stoves or pipe unless your willing to repaint often.

Wow that is a beautiful paint job...I might change my mind to copper now that I've seen yours! If you don't mind answering.. Is that Copper from Stove Bright? how many coats?

Appreciate the warning...I am not absolutely set on ivory...but curious if the stove pipe was stripped to bare metal before the Thurmalox in Ivory was put on? Thanks for your help in this!

It is copper stove bright. 2 coats.

The reason I say to stick with the identical paint is that one brand paint can act as a solvent for another. Back about 8 yrs ago DuraVent was painting their pipe with a paint other than StoveBrite. I was given a can of StoveBrite to touch up minor scratches on the pipe by the installer. To my horror about 15 minutes after painting the scratches the whole area started wrinkling. The acetone in the Stove Brite paint was not compatible with the paint Simpson had used and dissolved it underneath the new coat of StoveBrite.

If you do repaint your stove, do it outdoors or in a very well ventilated area. Use a vapor mask, especially if spray painting the stove. The fumes are very strong and brain damaging.

Thanks for all your help! I agree on the vapor mask suggestion, it's difficult as it is with the brain cells I haven't damaged..want to keep the rest of them safe. And I'll try to post here if I end up painting it. This forum is so helpful..Thanks all!!

Do people actually spray paint their stoves and pipes while they are sitting right in their living rooms? I can't imagine cleaning up the over spray this must produce. Won't it be better to take the stove outside or at least into a garage or shop before painting?

There really is not much overspray from stove bright. I re paint stoves inside pretty often. I have tarps down while cleaning anyway, a piece of cardboard makes a good shield too.

I once refinished a bathtub for a friend and it took me longer to clean up the bathroom from the over spray than the entire paint job of the tub!

We repaint in the house all the time. A couple drop sheets on the floor and tape up a couple plastic drop sheets to the wall behind the stove and good to go. In my own house i don't even bother with drop sheets if i'm redoing the pipes as there just isn't enough over spray to worry about.

Is there a paint like in chrome, silver or copper that a person could do a little fanciing up like the door, legs, etc?

I've used the pewter and the copper.
