First, this site has taught me a lot in a short period of time, so thanks. I purchased a Grandpa top vent wood stove (photo shows the stove when I moved it in today before I removed the log lighter bar to slide it back), which I would like to use as a slammer in my old mill (cir. 1787). Basically, there are about 3-4 months where I need help heating the large open area of the mill. I will move it out in the spring and revert to gas log lighter bar and ambiance fires.

The fireplace opening is large (52" wide x 37" tall and 37" deep), with a 25" brick hearth. The chimney about 60' high and draws great. The fireplace's steel damper opening is 6". I would plan to push the stove into the fireplace and let it rip, but I want to know what else I can do here. The chimney did not get much use and is in great shape. I am ok with pushing the boundaries here. Not a single thing about this mill is to code, except maybe the 3' thick fieldstone walls.

I'd love any insight you can share, recognizing that this is not my home, fires will not be left unattended and I am a cowboy. Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions, Ed
