What the heck is gasification as applied to wood-fired boilers?

Do a google on wood gasification and you'll get all the right hits to go read. Basically, it's the process of heating the wood will it gives off all the volital components, and the boiler uses that gas to heat with...kinda like an epa stove as near as I can tell.

They even make little camp stove gasifiers.
