Well, I've done it. I turned down a slam-dunk scrounge today. I got home & heard the intoxicating scream of chainsaws & the mighty roar of a big chipper. Tree Service at work!!
I was on baby duty for an hour, then another hour of chores before I finally got out to track down the action. I found my favorite local tree guys finishing-up for the day. By the time I got there everything was chipped except the trunks, but there was still a grapple-truck full of Oak & Silver Maple that they offered to drop at my place. SO I PASSED!?!
The Oak was hollowed out, gnarly & looked about impossible to split & the Silver Maple was pretty twisted & crotchy as well. I'm 2 years ahead with a small yard & have a lot on my plate with a new baby & plenty of other projects... blah, blah, blah, it still felt just wrong. I know it would have been a tough slog, & I'll get better stuff at a better time but there was somewhere around 2-3 cords on that truck that are now at the dump.
I did call a fellow wood-burner, but he wasn't interested (he generally buys his wood split & delivered in fall & burns it green).
This just feels wrong, like that wood needed a home & I just slammed the door in it's face.
