So I have been using the Fisher Insert I restored for a few years now . It works great and will easily run you out of the house with the amount of heat it puts out. One thing I seem to be struggling with is the proper use of the damper.
I control the air to the fire with the front sliders, both outer vents completely closed. As a matter of fact, the side vents remain closed all the time. I just leave the front door open a crack when lighting and getting the fire started. Once lit, I typically leave each sides slider open a pinky finger, day or night (the tip of my pinky is my feeler gauge).
I typically load the stove with an appropriate amount of wood before going to bed, and close the damper down to the 4th notch. This is how we did our fireplace insert while I was growing up. To load it up and close it down so the fire smoldered all night and plenty of coals were found in the morning to get the fire going again.
I have used the stove for a bit now and can't really tell much of a difference between having the damper more closed off, or leaving it more open.
I guess to state my question simply.....what is the damper supposed to do and what is its proper use?
As much heat as it puts out I am thinking maybe we need to leave it more open to let more of that heat go up the chimney......But I also don't want a burnt out fire in the morning.
