Fireplace won’t light even with pilot on

I have a heatilator gas fireplace. For some reason for the past year or two, it only lights every once every 1 in 10 times or so. The pilot light is on and I get a spark for the igniter but it just doesn’t catch and turn on.

Oddly enough, when I take the glass screen off and manually turn it on without the remote switch it turns on more frequently but definitely not every time. Maybe it’s 1 in 5 instead.

I’ve tried to use a Brillo pad to brush the igniters but that isn’t effective. I don’t see any build up on them or anything. I’ve had the fireplace for roughly 8 years or so now.

Any ideas on what to look at?

First thing I’d check is the ground wire where it attaches to the base of the steel shell.

There units are notorious for the sensor wiring going bad. So often you'd need to replace the pilot assembly to solve this issue.
