This has taken a while longer then I had hoped, but our fireplace face lift and new wood stove install is completed.
This is where it all started. I pulled our Fisher insert out to clean and found that the face of the fireplace had separated from the firebox with breaks in mortar and broken bricks. Mason says it's unsafe and has to come down.

I took down the brick and removed the damper and smoke shelf to make room for a free standing stove.

Hearth removed, OAK and power hole in bottom of firebox. Mason has rebuilt the back of firebox and closed in the chimney down to the size of the liner.

We now have wood heat once more. I'm very impressed with the heat output of this stove. Second morning burning 31* outside and my wife says it's too warm in here. Gota love it.
Next step is to paint room and replace carpet with laminate.
