Hello folks!

New to the form here and I’ve been a proud owner of Jotul F500 V3 since 2022 until recent.

After firing up the stove for the first this season we noticed the right side of the catalytic converter starting to blow apart.

I contacted the stove dealer and they asked me to come in with the photos to show them. Upon seeing the photos, the service manager stated that Jotel has indeed had an issue with the catalytic converters and has sent them a few replacements of a new design and material.

The new design is more open than the original, but what I’m experiencing is that the stove will not exceed a certain temp for efficient catalytic combustion.

I cannot get the stove surface to exceed 450°
Wondering if anybody else has had this issue?

The stove surface temperature is just a rough guide for the catalyst temperature. Was the new cat installed professionally with the proper gasketing? A catalyst thermometer would be helpful for knowing if it is gettting up to temperature.

Another thing to check, is the stove top on correctly? Check to make sure it is level from the side view as well as the front.

Thanks you for the suggestions!

Yes, top is installed correctly and new gasket material was installed as well to ensure proper seal.

Just checked the stove again and she has finally reached a combustion temp of just shy of 1200 with a laser surface reading 530 so I’m happy she finally reached those temps. Took a long time to do that though.

I’ve been wondering about this new Jotul design and all this new refractory and insulation surrounding the whole fire box. Seems to me it’ll burn clean and make the EPA happy but also send a lot of heat up the flue?

Just the opposite actually! Heat stays in the box and flu pipe stays pretty low temp at high 200’s in my setup but she burns super clean!

Where are you taking your stove top temps? I suppose it would be highest right above the cat.

That’s the stove pipe temp lol 😂 Temp of stove in cat combustion chamber in reburn mode is 1200 and stove top center just in front of top pipe exit is 500 to 550ish with a laser temp gauge!

Is the stove pipe double wall or single wall? Is the thermometer surface magnetic or a probe thermometer?

OK, with the flue gas temp at about 2x the surface reading, the high 200s sounds about right.
