Heard a scratching sound in the stove pipe last night. Soon discovered a flying squirrel in the Jotul which has yet to be fired up this fall. Each time I opened the loading door he(?) would scramble up above the secondary burn tubes where he was impossible to reach. Put a small hav-a-hart trap baited with peanut butter in the stove before I went to bed last night. Carried him outside within the trap this morning. How or why he managed to descend 35 feet of chimney, make his way into the stove pipe, navigate a 90 degree elbow and wind up in the stove will probably remain a mystery. In 35+ years of heating with wood, this is the first time I've had a creature of any kind come down the chimney.
I would be interested in hearing about any other fauna people have had to evict from their stoves.
