Searching for options on my dual sided masonry fireplace. Installed a gas log set a few years ago that we never use due to inefficiency and it’s a pain to get going. We would like some more heat and efficiency when using. Based off searching past forum posts, it seems that closing off one side (metal grate) and installing a gas insert is commonly recommended.

Are there any other or better options for this fireplace? Photos attached for clarity.

Is the goal to heat with gas or with wood?

Is the goal to heat with gas or with wood?
Gas. Reasons being that’s it’s already plumbed for gas and ease of startup. Wood has it’s appeal, but might not be the best option for our household.

Are there better wood options for this setup?

Not in wood, but maybe in gas. Moving to the gas forum.

Depending on the total depth of the system, you might be able to get two Direct Vent gas fireplace inserts that will fit back to back & give you heat to both rooms. There is a cap designed to accommodate such a set up. It’s not gonna be cheap, but it IS another option. I have installed a couple of these & the customers were very pleased with the resulting change in the warmth of their homes.
