Webmaster said:Never mind that most of our oil is DOMESTIC and/or comes from Canada or Mexico, etc.
If we could reprocess it like France and other countries with sane policys do (thanks alot carter!) we would have much less to store, and they vitrify the unusable waste (make it into little glass marbles) and store it in old salt mines where ground water isn't much of a problem. We have created our waste problem through bad government, just like bad government has created the hold up on the national storage. Both issues were created (bought) by the anti nuke sierra club types to stop the only real way out of "our dependence on foriegn oil".Webmaster said:I'm sure you know the "best coal" you are talking about is 4 to 5x the price of the coal they use for current generation.....solar would be cheaper!
The reason coal is used is that the soft coal is dirt cheap..........and easy to mine. Not so with the hard coal. They have already mined most of it which is relatively easy (and even that is not easy) to get at.
Just keeping you on your energy toes.....
Oh, and there is quite a bit of money in the budget for "clean coal" R&D;- of course, that is MUCH further in the future than solar and wind and just about every other fuel. As of now it is about the same pipe dream as being able to know what to do with nuclear waste.
Drilling here? The oil companies are running away fast because the price is not high enough. If you want more drilling here, ask your friends in DC to raise the price...
just saying......
It was in our local paper yesterday that the local nuke plant - which is already seeking a 40 year extension of the plant life, now has to store the nuke waste on site (next to the river) probably FOREVER. They have been informed that the fed repository will not be open until at least 2025 IF EVER. Perhaps you would want us to cart the stuff up near you in Maine...that way it might seep into your groundwater. After all, we really don't need Maine and the rest of us need the energy. What do you think
