What do you use to fortify your house against these creepy crawly critters? I know there is a granular spread that you put around the foundation of your house that when the ants crawl through they take it back to their nest and eliminates them.

I have good luck with Cyper WP (Cypermethrin 40.00%). Demon WP ,Cyper WP and Cynoff WP are all the same. I had numerous Carpenter Bees bore into some timbers last year and after letting them bathe in this they went to bee heaven and new ones have not returned. Works very well for spiders, ants, above ground termites (not too well in the ground), and other unwanted things. It is not sold in CT, AK, or NY. Here is a link where it is available: (broken link removed to http://store.doyourownpestcontrol.com/Product/I07402)
I see you're in NY JJ3500 - sorry.

Can't say much about termite prevention . But, for Carpenter Ants ,Ive found that Terro products are inexpensive and effective .
www.terro.com I find that the Ant baits work within a few days ,and the ants don't return .
A somewhat similar question was asked here ... http://www.forumsforums.com/3_9/showthread.php?t=27986

I use the Terro also.Works great.
I usually place a few handfulls on the wood pile under the tarp and over time it disappears as well as perimeter treating the house, garden , and wood pile.
Like Nixon said VERY inexpensive and effective.
