Being asked how I plan on anchoring my wood stove by building inspector according to 2009 international residential code m1307.2 However it's a general appliance rule and the manufacturer Drolet 1800 (no legs) says the arrive can be placed on anything rated as ember protection so that's the pad I got. Anchoring to the pad/joists would create areas for embers to fall and smolder correct? And how would I even do that? The stove is 375 pounds empty and the pipe should secure it with the hardware.

Please clarify, which model Drolet is this for? What are the flue details? How will it be run, through the house or out the wall and chimney outside. Is this for a home or manufactured home?

Drolet 1800 standalone (with the box not the legs). 6inch double wall pipe straight up to second floor. Then straight through the second floor out the roof with the chimney enclosed. 1970 home with crawlspace.

They make several 1800 models. Which one is this? By box, is this the pedestal Escape 1800?

Does the second floor pipe have a chase or is it in a closet or kneewall space? Does the chimney pipe from there go through an attic space or right through the roof?

I thought anchoring the stove was only required in mobile homes.

have never looked into it since I'm in a house

Sorry I goofed. It's an escape 1800. And yes pedestal. The second floor pipe will be enclosed in a chase. And no attic space. The second floor/attic was designed as a living space so it's just some decorative wood planks and drywall then the joists.

Provide them a printout and/or scan of the stove page for clearances. Also show the clearance requirements for the stove pipe are met. The stove does not need to be anchored unless in a mobile or manufactured home. However, it this is needed to get approval, it's not a big deal. Embers are not going to travel down a bolt shaft.

The firestop is created by the chimney support box which is all metal. No radiation shield is required for a chased pipe but do indicate construction details specifying materials used and clearance to the chimney pipe of at least 2" minimum.

If I had to make an inspection happy I’d just drill a hole (with the appropriate bit for the pad ) and epoxy a short piece of threaded rod in.

I'd rather lag it in than trying to get a heavy stove aligned over a couple of studs.

Hm, I was going to say what I thought you wrote and just deleted... (But I didn't dare to).

I deleted after reading the code. It looks like M1037.2 pertains to water heaters in seismic areas. In this case, M1307.1 is all that applies:

M1307.1 General
Installation of appliances shall conform to the conditions of their listing and label and the manufacturer's instructions. The manufacturer's operating and installation instructions shall remain attached to the appliance.

M1307.2 Anchorage of Appliances

Diagram of water heater

Appliances designed to be fixed in position shall be fastened or anchored in an approvedmanner. In Seismic Design Categories D0, D1 and D2, and in townhouses in Seismic Design Category C, water heaters and thermal storage units shall be anchored or strapped to resist horizontal displacement caused by earthquake motion in accordance with one of the following:
  1. Anchorage and strapping shall be designed to resist a horizontal force equal to one-third of the operating weight of the water heater storage tank, acting in any horizontal direction. Strapping shall be at points within the upper one-third and lower one-third of the appliance's vertical dimensions. At the lower point, the strapping shall maintain a minimum distance of 4 inches (102 mm) above the controls.
  2. The anchorage strapping shall be in accordance with the appliance manufacturer's recommendations.

I did find the instructions for the mobile home install. Consid

That's what I was getting from it. Kind of sucks because they took over two weeks to respond to my permit and it seems they denied it on error. The clearances from the wall to the stove were already supplied. I think I'll draw it up more clearly and attach some pictures like you said. Should I add in the addendum that I am willing to anchor the stove? I don't want to mostly because it will technically void the warranty of the hearth pad.

Yes. I thought that mfg instructions (manual) trump code because it has been tested according to the instructions of the manual. So even before code, I thought of what you deleted - because faking it sometimes makes more sense than convincing authority that has it wrong ...

Wow, seems the official is going by what they think is correct, but might not be. We had a building official who would not approve a permit for a customer because their 48x48 hearth pad for a F400 Castine did not "provide 18" of hearth protection in all areas, front back and sides of the stove." When customer pointed out hearth protection requirements again from the stove manual, the inspector's answer was "my requirements rule locally." We got a bigger custom pad for the customer at no cost. Sometimes you just shake your head. The good news is most inspectors are reasonable when shown the correct info. I still chuckle about this one years later... Stay warm.

I have found the best way to work with permitting departments is to provide an overabundance of information including a pdf of the manual, detailed, dimensioned, drawings of the planned installation, separate copy of the clearance and hearth requirements, and a copy of the flue system components installation guide and documentation of their clearance requirements. Highlight pertinent sections of the manual that are specific to the installation on additional page(s).
