After regretfully removing our stove - we’re replacing it. Hearth is gone, so building another one has come with some questions.

We’ve seen a few stoves that are on raised hearths (which we’ve decided on) but a few were placed with the stove front opening just a few inches from the hearth edge. Far short of what I think is 18”. I’d think this not allowable unless having it so raised passed code/requirement somehow? One even had a simple fireproof mat on the floor. I’ve even heard of having the box on a few cinder blocks.

Does anyone in here have similar setup? I know when we had ours installed the insurance people came out and took pictures and measurements to make sure all was up to snuff.

A fireplace rug is not a substitute for hearth protection (either for r- value or just ember protection) .

Your new hearth should meet or exceed the specs of the stove your putting in. If the stove specifies a certain r-value then you’ll have to follow that. If the stove specs just ember protection that makes it a little bit easier.

I don’t think height would do anything for ember protection specs.

There are some strictly side-loading stoves from Woodstock that can have an 8" hearth in front. Otherwise, unless stated in the documentation, the stove needs 16-18" hearth protection in front.

Thank you for the advice. Have purchased a stove for 2,000 sq. ft. living area and will just do the customary 18” clearance. Money dictated what we bought but it will work.
