Hi, I’m a new owner of a Jotul f45 and absolutely love it. I burn birch. I use a stove top thermometer per Jotul’s instructions, and like to keep my burns in between 325 and 550. My question is this: in the coal stage, the temp will drop below 300 into the “creosote” zone. But my house will still be warm and I’m not ready for more wood yet. Is this safe, or am I producing creosote with a coal bed below 300? Thanks!

It's fine. There's no wood volatiles that will produce creosote during the coal stage of the fire.

Sounds like you may have a single wall stove pipe thermometer? They usually have those creosote ranges. If you have single wall pipe I’d stick it on that about 18” above the stove and get another thermometer for the stove top. Both are good guides to tell you what’s going on with your stove.

I have a Jutol 118 have used it since the mid 70's, great stove. There is a crack on the outside panel that goes the entire width of the panel. Anyway to repair this? I have replaced the inside baffles. Thanks
