My brick chimney is external, on gable end of the house. Where the wide bit of it transitions to the top bit, they simply stepped the bricks. This makes for very tedious siding & flashing detail, so I would like to cap this somehow so as to create a single straight edge. What are my options? I also need to investigate painting this chimney.

The simplest solution I am seeing is to use a pair of 16" concrete pavers on either side. I can cut that angle to joint neatly at the top and match that on the bottom drip edge.
