For 21 years I used to have a Regency I3100 wood insert and never had any problems burning 6-8 hardwood cords every winter. Once during a summer chimney clean up they suggested my chimney cap (as per attached pic.) was too small and offered a larger SS one which I purchased. However during my first use in the winter I noticed that the draft was excessive and the first chance I had I re installed the old cap which has always gave me a good draft control. However I learned that increasing the cap size it provides more draft.

Last Fall I had to replace my I3100 due to cracks with a new Regency I2450 and noticed I almost have no draft control regardless how far I opened the draft lever. Searching on this forum I learned that this insert has a baffle at the top of the firebox which is a common problem on these inserts and perhaps needs adjustment to increase the draft.

I have been unable to access this baffle inside the firebox, kind of too difficult for me, and I was thinking perhaps it will be easier to replace my chimney cap with a larger cap like I did with my old insert. What is your opinion?

For further info, the chimney cap is about 35 feet from the ground and there are no other buildings/trees around my chimney.

Thanks

It's a simple thing to check. See page 23 of the manual or have the dealer come out and adjust the vertical deflector.

Thanks for the help, I removed the air tubes as needed but was unable to remove the firebricks regardless how much I jingle them. So I thought perhaps if I replace my chimney cap to a larger size that may increase the draft. My dealer is retired so I have to contact Regency for another rep if I decide to get their help

Any idea how the size of a chimney cap is established? If the local stores offer various sizes there must be a relation which size is good for a particular insert.

It may not be the cap size, but the cap style that made the difference. Some are designed to increase draft. Post a picture of the alternative replacement cap.

To remove the baffles, the smoke deflector needs to be removed first. Then the front two tubes get removes. After that the baffles should come out. Do this carefully, they are somewhat fragile. Page 15 shows how to install. Do the reverse.

It's true, I should have said "cap style". I don't have an alternative replacement cap but I will get it from Amazon, local supply is very limited styles. It's unfortunate I ditched the cap I bought from the chimney cleaners a few years back cause it was pretty good and I may purchase again a new cap from the cleaners when I get the chimney cleaned this summer. My experience is a different style than the one I have now increases the draft.

Thanks for the reference pictures, I know about it and have follow the instructions but my problem is with the firebricks, I just can't lift enough the first one for removal to access the baffle above. Perhaps since the bricks are new and not "worn" a bit they may need a tap with a hammer but I'm afraid I may damage the brick. In any case assuming I can access the baffle above I still have to work on it and it may be difficult so it's much easier to try first with a new cap.

Many thanks

Could the vertical deflector be too low and preventing raising the bricks?

It is possible the deflector may cause the problem...., the attached picture shows the old Regency but also shows the step in the front. This step prevents me to do the required work because I find it difficult due to my age to bent as needed and have a proper look. Now Spring is here so I may find someone to have a look.
