Chimney Brush Size

Quicky... I am going to need two chimney brushes. One I know is a 6" Poly for my double wall S-S. The one I am unsure about is my fireplace flue. It is a clay flue that measures 11"X11" from the INNER walls. I am thinking that maybe I should get a 12" brush? Or is the 11" square brush actually larger and made for the 11" flue?

And how about the mess? If the stove is closed, I would assume it all would contained within it until I clean it. And on the fireplace... Would the glass doors pretty much contain everything? I read about covering furniture and that. I am assuming that is for open fireplaces.

Any pointers and thoughts on any of this would be helpfull.

I'd go with a 12x12 [square-shaped brush] roundwire [round-shaped tines]. On the open fireplace, close your damper and run a shop vac by the doors, that should take care of that. For the stove, you're probably going to be fine.

I would not go with the round brush if your flue is square. Make sure you get a square. I like round wire. You want to get the corners too. Yes normally the brushes are a little oversized to fit the flues. Don't get too large as you may find that pushing is fine but when you then try to reverse and pull it gets hung up or visa versa. Companies like Rutland will custom make size for you also if you can't find the size. Or you could buy the next size larger and spend all the time and effort to cut it down (not a pleasent task). I do mine with tthe fireplace doors closed, the damper closed, and the draft slots closed. No dust or dirt at all. However when you open it all up, especcially the damper, better have the vacum running.

A "roundwire" brush is completely different than a "round" brush. A round wire brush is made of just that small round wire. A flat wire brush made of flat wire. Poly brush made of poly. All different styles of brushes come in several sizes and shapes, for the different flues out there.

sorry shane. I new that. Just must have misread your post. Thought it was recomending a round brush not a round wire at first. My ooops.
