After pushing in two loads of cherry and one of sugar maple we went for a ride back in the woods, on the way out we went up above the brook and found this cherry (nice size) I hope to start working in this area next week for the start of the new year.

was a few years back when i had a fella ask me if i could get him enough for kitchen cupboards but not a clue now? but i imagine they will be willing to pay..

i had a very hard time finding enough that were straight though and not that knotty.

looking for something to do right now ;-) so will grab the camera and go and take a couple pics of the stand i got them from.

Around here most of the cherry never gets big enough to make much lumber.

Zap, if that January thaw does come right around Jan. 1, it will make cutting that up a whole lot nicer. I hate to cut trees that are covered with snow.

went over and had a look and there are only maybe 10/15 of them with the odd one through the woods and thinking savage has it right as they dont last that long? but this place has never been 'logged'.

made a trail around this fella over the years as it deserved it :cheese:

just found this big Maple and musta went down in the last couple weeks zap ;-P will keep me busy for a bit...

Loon nice looking dog. That maple should keep you busy for a while, what types of wood on your property?

The cherry seemed to get hit the hardest after any windstorm here.

Is the cherry up there any good for boards? My uncle that lives up that way has a sawmill and says the native cherry isnt good for lumber... he called it by a different name... if I recall correctly he reffered to it as pennsylvania walking cherry. Something about if you make furniture out of it it will 'walk' away as the wood twists and warps. I dunno.

Lots of cherry around here, and I have heard some say to sell it for lumber and some say the wild cherry here isnt good so IDK. There is some huge stuff, the one right next to my treestand has got to be 30", straight, and tall.

i am not sure Burner? the load i cut was for my wifes girlfriends husband and he had a guy come to his place to process it.

will see if he has any pics he can send me and any info on how it went. this was 5/6 years ago so it should be good and dry and if any warping occurred.
i do remember when we were trying to come up with a price the one mill offered 60 cents and the other was 90 cents..they didnt mention warping but were quite adamant about straightness and knots...

it definitely wasnt a money maker thats for sure %-P

solarandwood i dont sell wood for boards or stoves as it was a one shot deal..

but the guy at the mill said he didnt want any of the wood in the red part of this pic i tried to make ;-P

SolarAndWood, never measured it but will do this weekend. A few years back I talked with the sawmill and cherry did not bring that much money but it brought about four years worth of firewood. :coolsmile:

I think the circumference of the tree needs to be close to 30 inches or a minimum of 28.26 for the mill.

In Fall 1998 I felled & milled a decent sized Black Cherry that had the top broken in a summer storm at a friend of my parent's property. Ended up with about 150 board feet of clear knot-free 90% heartwood 1" planks,cut 7ft long. Plus several short blocks 3"-4" thick 3" to 10" wide for woodturning projects.I rarely use lumber over 5-6' for furniture & other projects,so this worked out perfectly. Air-dried to about 10-12%,then a few yrs later moved into heated shop for eventual further processing & use.The slabs,scraps & edging went for kindling & my smoker.I lucked out here,quite a bit of Black Cherry in the Midwest but the size & quality is rarely the same as that in Pennsylvania & New York.

Zap, I have been doing some clear cutting for a guy and he told me to take all the wood, he had a few cherry along with hard maple and ash. Had a total of about 20 logs and the wood buyer paid $800 for them. They will normally take cherry as long as it is over 10" diameter and at least 8.5 feet long.

If I remember right, our game is to get as close to 24" diameter as possible without going over with the good stuff. Last time was the first time I have managed the cut though and my primary goal was cutting all the cull out. A lot of it went to pulp that barely covered the trucking. Hopefully that will pay off in a few decades. I wouldn't consider taking 10" lumber trees out unless they were ash and bugs were coming.

No idea loon, I'm barely qualified to cut firewood. Thankfully, we have a great logger who cares about our woods as much as we do and is happy to work within our long term goals.

That would be in the game if there is a good log in it and you had enough of them. I have a friend that collects logs like that and gets the guy from the mill to come out once he has a truckload. But, he has a 90 HP 4WD tractor with the big Farmi winch to get them out to a place a truck can get to.

That 90HP would chew up the trails today, real slushy and down to the ground. I did find another sugar maple down on our ride we took, if the rains not real bad Saturday I'm going after that.
