I have a VC 1910, 24 years old. Used a good 3 months each year. I need a new top. Mine has a crack 6" long and the finish is breaking apart at the back. I have searched high and low, near and wide, up and down, here and there, no new ones. So I did some research on getting the top refinished in Nashville. I came across a process called Cerakote good to 1800 degrees, I get my box hot, but no where near 1800!
Has anyone had any experience with this process, they are nationwide? I would really like to hear if anyone has used them or any other process.
Appreciate your comments

Ceracote is a ceramic coating. It will not repair the crack. You could try some JB-Weld extreme heat epoxy on both sides of the crack to see if that will make it through the season, but no guarantee there. First, drill a small 1/8" hole at the end of the crack to stop it from spreading.

Look for a used Defiant for parts. I'm not sure but the Defiant 1945 top might fit?

Hi, I appreciate your reply. The Cerakote dealer and I discussed fixing the crack first. After the crack is repaired the apply the Cerakote. I due like your idea about drilling a hole to stop it from spreading. The flue piping is completely different on the 1945 vs 1910, tops are not interchangeable. Good idea to check though.
Do you have any experience with Cerakote??
Thanks

No I've only read about Cerakote and it's uses. It's good to connect with the dealer for guidance.

Repair of the crack with epoxy is likely temporary because it probably will expand at a different rate than the cast iron. If so, eventually the bond will crack. How long the extreme temp epoxy repair holds is TBD. I don't know if the fix would last for a season or longer.

There are specialty welders that can weld cast iron. They repair valuable machined castings and some exhaust manifolds among other things. It might be worth consulting with a specialist in this field.

This place on eBay has a new 1910 front. Maybe ask if they have the top?

I agree very important to get the crack properly repaired first. I will look for cast iron welders. I am also going to look for a used top without any cracks. I appreciate your replies
