I got 2 trailer loads of it, and a few more if I want them.

it splits easy, pink all the way thru, smells ODD.
Not vomit dog mess smell, but almost a chemical smell.

its a familiar smell but I cant place it, also, the grain is BEAUTIFUL, I wish it was left in longer sections Id plane some out.

North West Arkansas location.

any ideas?

thanks!
Matt

looks a little like the black cherry from around here...but I wouldn't swear to it.

thats cherry

some other folks have said cherry too, I thought thats what the bark looked like.

how does it burn?

how long does it take to season?

I think cherry burns well, it's lower in btu's than say oak, beech, and hard maple
It doesn't give very good coals
I think it dries pretty quickly compared to other hardwoods.

20 million btu per cord

Cherry is good wood, money in the bank.
You can tell when its seasoned and ready to burn as it wont have that odor anymore after a re-split.

Looks like cherry to me also. I burn a lot of it and love it. I would rank it with white ash as far as how it burns.
cherry/osage is a great overnight burn cocktail.

grab a small piece and light it up, You will know in a second if its cherry as the wonderful aroma of cherry is unique and unmistakeble

Cherry makes EXCELLENT coals. In fact, it makes too many coals. Not sure what you're burning....

Not compared to beech or hard maple, I'm sure of what I'm burning.

EDIT- I see in looking at some charts cherry is listed as excellent for coaling, I guess I'm comparing it to other woods I feel are better.

I don't think cherry is a bad wood, I burn some of it, but when its -30 here I don't stoke up for the night with cherry.

It is my favorite for trim work.

well...
Saying "It doesn't give very good coals" is very misleading.

Saying "it doesn't give very good coals compared to _______" would be more appropriate.

Cherry has given me better coals than any other wood I've burned, so much so that they consume all of my firebox space, which can be a detriment.

Probably, I'll check with you next time before I post...

Honey locust is a much harder wood than black cherry, but I'd take cherry over locust given the choice.
There are just some woods that I like the burning characteristics more than others, whether they burn hotter or not.
Hackberry is another underappreciated wood imo.
There are a few btu charts out there and I don't always believe what they tell me either because they're not consistent.
One of them ranks cherry below soft maple and I know that ain't right.

thats pretty funny!

you guys need to get out and split some wood.

I noticed this cherry splits VERY easily, man I love it!

also some hickory mixed in this load, and it splits well too.

I have to research and find the characteristics of hickory now.

I messed up my 066 saw a few days ago, and my shoulder has been sore from splittin, but the firewood stacks are growing , and life is good!

It was a beautiful day for splitting and tomorrow looks to be as good. Need to get going early so I can be done in time to watch Matt Kenseth win the Daytona 500!

yep thats hickory bottom left......twice as heavy.

That doesn't look like the Cherry trees that are around here, maybe they are different down south? I was going to guess some kind of southern Pine.

a few of the wood piles.

Been burning that Cherry from those first pics for a couple of nights now.

man I love that stuff, dried out fast, burns well, and coals up great!

its so easy to split too, its my sought after wood now!

thanks guys!

Glad it is working out well for you. We also burn some cherry but it is not our main wood. I like it and would burn more if we had it. We still have lots and lots of ash to cut. Dang insects.

agreed...but you all missed the best part.
Best smelling wood just after split.
My mouth is watering just thinking about that cherry.
