Currently, my chimney is being used to vent my oil boiler (steam heat), with a flue pipe in the basement.

I'm thinking of replacing my oil heating system with heat pumps, at which point the chimney will no longer be used by my boiler.

I know that a wood stove can't vent in the same chimney as a furnace or boiler, but can I reuse the chimney if it's no longer being used by the furnace/boiler?

If so, is my only option to install the stove in the basement? Or can I make another connection with the chimney elsewhere?

Yes, it's possible. An insulated stainless steel liner is installed in the chimney ending in a tee at the wall thimble connection. The tee's snout passes through an insulating, protecting thimble and the stovepipe connects there. The tee is typically capped on its bottom end. If the chimney is exposed on the main floor where the stove connection is desired, then the insulating thimble may not be required.
