Thanks for the advice we bought the house last year and had it inspected and swept. The guy recommended that and quoted me like $2600 but seemed real pushy so I didn't do it. Does that sound like a fair price I live in MD. Maybe I will have someone else come out and quote me a price.Ugh, that stuff in your chimney is bad. It's shiny creosote. If that ignites, you have big problems.
Before putting in a liner (necessary), it needs to be thoroughly (chemically?) cleaned.
I'd even say that before using the insert, this needs to be cleaned (and lined).
Yes you need a stainless liner and a very thorough cleaning. $2600 is actually really cheap. Between the low price and the fact that he actually cleaned it for you I would look for someone else.
