As all of you know trees have diverse mating systems and sometimes its difficult to tell the sex of a tree. I'm deep into my wood burning this winter and I think I've discovered a good way to tell if I'm burning male wood or female wood.
Male firewood is really hard. Makes good wood for the the morning fire. Often gets overheated in the stove and emits (sometimes prematurely) large popping sparks at the end of the burn.
Female wood is temperamental. The stove needs to be just right. Moisture content tends to be higher. Got to play with the dampers and flue to get air flow correct. Once started, female wood gets REALLY hot!
I'm still working on my experiments in determining male/female sex in firewood and what effects it has on burn time.
