It’s just big leaf maple which is not as good as the eastern varieties but better btu than my normal Doug fir softwoods. What makes it great is the ash that slows down the burn and allows the coals to go much longer. Getting regular 24 hour reloads with overnight temperatures in the teens. Clean glass too.

It’s nice to coal that long.. I finally had several days of three year old live oak. Air settings were different as it needed more air but easy re lights in the morning is nice. But when you have to push something hard. My dense yellow pine can pump out more BTUs in a day than oak I believe. Just have to load it every 4 hours.

Good point. If I needed maximum heat it feels like I could get more out of a non ashing, non coaling fuel. Luckily this BK is right sized for my house and environment so it seldom is run at over 50% of the thermostat normal range.

Pine and doug fir burn pretty similarly in my experience. Maybe a little faster on the pine just because of the lower density but it's still pretty decent.

Hardwood like this is nice. Red oak. 4.5+ years old.

I find that oak doesn't coal as much in my BK. Folks say oak coals.
Maple indeed can bury itself but I don't like it. Too much fluff
