Hi - is anyone familiar with a type of coal burner built into the side of a wood burning fireplace? We just moved into a house with a large wood burning fireplace. About one foot to the side of the opening are two cast iron doors. One says Bennett-Ireland Inc. with a picture of a flame. It has a grate. One foot below that is another door which appears to be a pit of some kind (has ash in it). This door says Donley Bros. Co. We believe this is some type of coal burner if you don't want to burn wood in the fireplace. It has a separate chimney. We're at a loss as to how you burn coal in it and second, how do you clean out that ash box from that little door. The doors are probably 10" x 10" or maybe smaller.
Thanks.
Thanks.
