Not only a beautiful day for cutting wood but today my wife was a big help. I love cutting wood but it just makes it special when we can work together. This first picture I took on the way back to where we cut today. It is on our sand hill and this is the spot where we cut our Christmas tree. We also cut one for our unemployed neighbor and these were the only two in this bunch that were good enough for Christmas trees. We do not do any trimming or shaping and all of this bunch came up wild. We do have several thousand others that we've planted over the years.
We talked about cutting this pin oak today but decided to wait on this until the snow melts because where it will fall is on a slope and we don't like sledding or sliding while cutting wood. It will wait for Mother Nature to melt the snow, but the snow melts very slow here on this sand. Out in the open it will melt much faster because of grass growing there. On this sand hill it is just bare sand dune.
This is our bowl. It is just a small area in the sand where it is actually bowl shaped. The deer seem to love it as we often see where they just run around playing. Sometimes is also is a good place for hunting. One time a fox had a den on one side (south facing) and the next year a coyote used it. You can see on the far side where we were cutting this morning.
Here is the wood hauler.
Unfortunately the day ended rather abruptly for us this afternoon. We got the trailer about half loaded and then I noticed a flat tire. Went to the barn for a jack and pump but the tire broke the seal and we could not get a good seal. So we emptied the trailer and took it to the barn. I pulled the tire and we have to go to town tomorrow anyway so I'll make a quick stop at the tire store. Probably if I had a decent air compressor I could get it sealed but it won't take long in town.
Also, before we headed up with the trailer I cut more on an oak we had down....but made a wrong move and the back screamed at me. Not good. But I made it up and got the tire off. Took some nasty pain medicine. It is starting to work some but this is not fun. Also have heat pack in the back which helps.
