Battery backup???

Hi I am new to this forum and have a question about battery backup systems. I saw while doing research that Harmon offers a battery backup for their stoves.
My question is, can a battery backup be used with any stove or just the Harmon. I really like the idea of having the backup as we get a lot of power outages here in the Berkshires in western ma.
I have not yet decided on a stove but am leaning heavily towards the Englander stoves. I like the Harmons but a little too pricey.
Any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Gottahavvitt welcome to the forum a battery backup can be used with any stove you will need a pure sine inverter and deep cycle marine batteries, I myself choose to use a generator but thats just me.

Thanks for the fast response. I didn't even think of using one of my generators because of the noise and complaints from the heighbors but now that I think about , all the neighbors will probably be at my house to keep warm. I think I will still go with the battery backup so I will have time to set up the genny.

Joe, just to clafity a little about what mnkywrnch said about batteries, some stoves will run off of straight 12v dc from a car battery, while the rest require the inverter he mentioned.

Obviously, the genny is the best solution to long power outages, but some of the more expensive gel-type 12v batteries have quite a long run time, depending on the stove.

some of the quad units will run on a factory cable using just a 12v battery.

I just read in another post that some stoves will run directly off a battery. Can anyone tell me what set up I will need for a Englander 55-shp10?

If it will run off a 12v battery, I'm sure it will say that in the owners manual. To be 100% sure, send a PM to Mike Holton. (stoveguy2esw)....he's the head tech guy at Englander and a "regular" on this forum.

I use the Harman 512 batt. backup and power it with 6 six volt batteries Runs my stove for at least 10 hours

My insert is a Sierra, it is a 12 volt system, I have a deep cycle cell 12 volt battery that is installed behind the insert. The stove trickle charges the battery to keep it fully charged, when the electric is disrupted it switches over to the battery and will run the stove for days, when the power meaning ac power has been restored it will switch back to the ac power and charge the battery back to full charge.

That was handy when we had the ice storm last year and lost power.

They have this stove connected to solar panels on their website, I will see if I can find that picture and post it here.

I want to thank everyone for their help. Now if I could just get someone to hold my hand and help me decide which stove. LOL
