A few months back I cut up a dead tree that I originally thought was ash. After splitting it I’m starting to think it is unfortunately Basswood. It actually seems harder to split than ash because the maul has a tendency to sink into the wood. What do you guys think it is?

Thanks for the help.

I had some Basswood last season that looked like that, same bark and the white grain. It wasn't terrible, not quite as good as Ash but not too bad.

How does it feel weight-wise when you lift it? Basswood is notably lighter in weight compared to most other hardwoods when comparing similarly sized wood.

It is definitely lighter than a confirmed ash tree I cut down that was green. This probably basswood tree was dead for a while though. It has a ton of holes from woodpeckers, I initially thought it was the EAB. I’m going to lean towards it being basswood though. Thanks for the help guys.

[Hearth.com] Basswood or Ash ID Pull the bark and look. I could go to the wood pile and take pictures but, I’m lazy. This is what the wood will look like. We do not have a live ash anywhere around that I know of.

Looks like basswood. Very white simple grain pattern and bark looks like it. Dries fast and burns about like poplar or boxelder. I don’t mind it and I think it has its place in a woodpile as long as it’s free.

+1 for basswood
Basswood bark is fibrous - see OP's 3rd pic.
