Found it! HT1600 is the model number I've found the manual online, but it makes no mention of what the intake thing on the back is.

The HT1600 had a preinstalled OAK adapter. Should be left open. Another link about chiminey draft FAQs: (broken link removed to http://www.stevestoyostove.com/support/faqs/faq_wood.pdf)

So leave the back cover open always while operating? And then the front primary closed? Or open 10%?

Try a medium sized fire (stove half loaded) with the rear cover open. Start the fire normally. As the wood becomes completely engaged and aflame start incrementally reducing the air supply until the flames get lazy, then wait for the fire to regain strength, and then reduce the air again until the flames get lazy, repeat until the air is mostly closed (about 10% open?).

PS: Still wondering how tall the chimney is on this stove??

What is the deal with the separate box fan behind your stove? It looks like it is aimed to blow right on the fan mounted on your stove. Does that fan built into the stove blow out or is is sucking air in back there and blowing hot air out some other vent?

I would take the OAK restricter device off completely to make sure it doesn't block the air supply again by accident but keep it nearby in case you have a runaway stove, that would be the main use for that thing.

Use that front air slider on top above the door, shut it down from full open to half then half of that once you have a good bed of coals and a fire well established, if you can close it down all the way is going to depend on your draft and how much heat you want from it.

The box fan is because the mounted blower fan is not currently working. My husband stuck the box fan back there (usually pointed straight up) to help accomplish the action that the blower fan would normally do. It is not currently running, which is why it is pointed directly at the back of the stove right now.
