when you remove the auger should you be able to turn it freely? have had it apart twice now tonight, not really impressed with a brand new stove and only have run 3 bags tops through it and parts already going bad. stove is a mt vernon ae.

Does it make that noise with no pellets in the device? If so then, yes, something is not right with the feed system. However that doesn't always mean anything is actually broken. It may be out of alignment or a coupling is loose from having removed things to "clear" a jam. Those AE feed systems have far more parts than most and there is always the possibility that you didn't get things back just right.
Well looks can sometimes be deceiving, all it takes sometimes is uneven seating of multiple fasteners to be just enough to toss the wrench into the works on some parts. There are seven parts in that system that have to be fastened together.
What year is that AE and did you look into any updates that may have been released since the date of manufacture?
