My relative cannot find the x27 I gave to him to try, but really its for his birthday present.

He called me to see if I picked it up out of the wood trailer. There were some unidentified foot prints along with polaris atv tracks around the wood trailer.

Quads, where were you between the hours of 4:00 pm monday to 2:00 pm today?

Waiting to see if a imitation fiskars shows up in the for sale forum then I'll have'em. :lol:

HAHA! Nope, no danger of that there Fiskars ending up in my woods! I'm innocent....!

Yup, I swing my old maul and the wood splits. I can't see any way to improve upon that! As a matter of fact, out of all my habits, methods and procedures for making firewood, splitting with my maul is the most perfect of them.

Quads, I tell ya buddy. I just received one of these 28 inch fiskars for my birthday a few weeks back because I wanted to disprove all this hype. Now, I don't have any access to some wet beech to tell you how it does yet, but the gnarliest stuff I had around my house that I had been avoiding with my tried and true 8lb maul made me take a step back in awe when I used this fancy finlandian thing. I'm holding out a real review until I get some fresh nasty stuff to try, but so far I just can't possibly understand how physics allows this little beast to do so much.

First impressions, ultra impressed. Here is my maul. When this doesn't cut it I go to a 10lb sledge and some nice thin wedges. Proud to say it belonged to my grandfather before I received it. This thing has cut some wood over the years. I'm certainly not going to retire it but right now, I'm not going to criticize anything that this glorified scissor company makes.

If this shorty impresses me in the spring, I'm going to find me an x27 for certain as that can only be even more of an improvement.

HAHA! You guys and your calculations.... My point is that when I swing my maul the wood splits, as it always has. I have no need to change anything when I already have a perfectly satisfactory way of doing one of my favorite activities. I don't go too fast, I don't go too slow, I don't work too hard at it, and it's not too easy; it's just right the way it is. :-D

E=1/2*M*V^2

E = Energy

M = Mass

V = Velocity

The axe can be swung at almost twice the speed of a maul hence much higher impact energy.

Energy is only the potential to do work. W=F x d
Point is, I know I am not swinging it faster. That's why it's a mystery to me how this thing can better transfer it's energy to the wood. It is simply more effecient.

Are you Amish or of one of the communities that doesn't take to technology? Good thing computers were made before you were too set in your ways, otherwise we wouldn't be speaking right now. "I don't need no dang box to talk to people". :D j/k

HA! If I could get my maul to connect to the Internet, I'd probably use it for that too! HAHA! I am still using 56K dialup as it is....

:lol: Even as 'old school' as I am,I switched to 8MB DSL almost 3yrs ago.I dont use my maul for connections,but do have a couple of hamsters that live on Rockstar Energy Drinks running that wheel (after I save one can in the fridge for meself.)

One of my fav signs - People forget or dont realize that the finest furniture & woodwork in houses,castles & other structures ever made was in the 17th to the 19th Century,they certainly didnt 'plug the tool in' or pick it up from the nearest Big Box Store.... ;-)

Actually, DSL isn't even available here. They tell me that within the last year they made available one of these little wireless things that plugs into your USB port so that you can get wireless Internet through US Cellular, but it's twice the price of the dialup I have now. No reason for me to change, Internet is not worth that much to me.

I also still do my income taxes with a pencil. I am somewhat miffed that the federal government has stopped mailing the forms/book out this year. So now I will wait until the library in town gets them and continue to use my pencil....

but quads you did seem to take a like'n to that digital camera of yours! :coolsmile:
Yup, I love taking pictures! Never owned a film camera in my life. I bought my first camera in 1996, a digital, and now I wish I had owned a camera long before that. Every picture or video I have ever uploaded to share was over my dialup connection.

I have no problem embracing technology if I feel it will improve upon something in my life, or if it's just plain fun. But, as in the case of my old maul, if it's already doing the job as well as I want it to, and I'm having fun with it, there is no reason for me to 'upgrade'. The younger people nowadays, being raised around all the fancy gizmos and gadgets, seem to have the hardest time understanding why someone wouldn't want the latest and flashiest thingamajig.

The x27 is also very nice and I feel it fits me better than the 28" splitters.

No going back to the old maul for me, I love my fiskars!!!! Yes, you do have to change your swing or it will bite you but that's no problem after a few days splitting.

Hmmm. I've had an X27 for a couple of days now. Coincidence? :lol:
Actually, it would cost me more in gas to drive up there and steal it than the cost of the ax.

I just went out and popped a couple of Black Oak rounds as a preliminary test. I found my original splitting ax to be much more efficient than the 6# and 8# mauls I was using before, and I think the X27 will be another order of magnitude better. It seems to slip through the round like butter. It's a pound or two lighter (more speed,) has a narrower wedge and the handle is two inches longer. Plus the slippery coating on the head, although I don't know how long that will hold up.

With a lighter head, even though you're swinging the handle at the same speed, the head ends up moving faster because it has less inertia. And the coating keeps the force moving through the wood instead of slamming on the brakes due to friction...

I've got the usb modem. I wish I could get it for twice the price of dialup, which was $10 last time I checked. Verizon offered to sell me a new 4G modem and reduce my monthly rate from $60 to $50 (have to sign another 2-year contract.) I'm going to see how the LTE upgrade shakes out, compare Verizon to ATT and whatever else is available, then decide which way to go.

Fiskars and usb modem...go for it, man! Dialup is no fun. :lol:
But note next to the axes...taxes waiting to be filled out with a pencil. :lol:

So are these back in stores or are they special order only? Last I heard they were on back order at Amazon and other places....

Not going to happen. I will probably get DSL if the rumors are true and it becomes available here this year, but not going to get a USB modem, no Fiskars, and I will do taxes with a pencil until the day I die. HA!

I would be all over the DSL for $25-30/month...if I could get it. Seems like everything is going wireless, so I don't see them investing to get the fiber (1mi. to the box) and fiber mux anytime soon (I have heard rumors, too.) :long:

Without the Fiskars, splitting wood will kill you a lot sooner. :lol:

Hey, quads, I'm coming up to SE WI soon to see family; How many feet of snow are still on the ground? :lol:

I ordered a peavey and some felling wedges from Bailey's and decided to go ahead and get the X27 too, even though I probably could have gotten it cheaper somewhere else. I got the other stuff but the X27 was back-ordered...only took a few extra days, though.

Snow is gone here in the center of the state, finally. On the north side of some of the hills you can still find a little, maybe, and frost in the ground. Ground was white with sleet yesterday.
