I had a Woodsman back in the mid 90’s but it didn’t have a glass door. I burned it one season then turned it into a Maple sap boiler.

Love Woodsman stoves! I have another classic 70s Woodsman as my full-time burner for my home. I couldn't be happier.

Just like a lot of classic stoves / technology it takes a bit of experience to get good efficient burns out of it. Just like Todd, my first winter was a rough one getting to know the stove. It wants to eat all your wood, however, if you learn the optimal dampening times to produce the optimal coal production, you will have a very efficient stove that pumps out a lot of heat!

Couple of tips:
Choke it down to a 6" flu, fire it good and hot in the morning, pack it, then dampen it fully, then undampen a touch. That is the optimal setting for mine. I will go through roughly 2 cubical feet per day, and be quite toasty in my 1500sqft 100 year old drafty home in -30c.

My favourite part of the stove? Easy peasy to get fired up, puts out a LOT of heat. I have a modern stove rated for higher sqsft that puts out LESS heat than this good ol' Woodsman will. My next favourite part? Old-fashioned stove with virtually no long-term maintenance (besides the flu of course).

Hope you give it a shot.
