The insert will keep shutting down even when I have the thermostat set at 85. Then when it's starts back up the firebox fill so much with smoke that some actually leaks into the house is this normal?
 
Yes the thermal couple has braided wires in it and needs to touch the end of the metal. Just loosen the 2 screws and make sure the 2 wires are pushed in so they touch the other end.
